3 dead after shooting at San Jose State University

(CNN) -- Three people are dead after a shooting in a campus parking garage at San Jose State University, spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris said Wednesday.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday on the California campus. Harris said university police responded to a report of a possible shooting and found two people dead on the fifth floor of the garage. A third person was taken to a hospital but died upon arrival, Harris said.

Harris said it was not clear whether the deceased were students. No identities have been released pending autopsy results.

Harris said a campus alert was issued about one hour after the original call was received. She said police secured a perimeter and that the rest of the campus was not in danger.

Police do not believe the incident was a drive-by, gang-related nor robbery-motivated shooting, Harris said.

San Jose State is a public university with about 30,000 students.

Rare fungal infection strikes Joplin, Missouri, tornado victims

(CNN) -- Eight people injured by the devastating Joplin, Missouri, tornado have contracted a rare fungal infection, and three have died, officials said Friday. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is assisting state and local health officials, who are investigating the cases. All three individuals who died had serious injuries, as well as fungus, Jasper County Coroner Rob Chappel said. One of the deaths was caused by the infection, called mucormycosis, but the cause of death for the other two victims has not been determined, he said. All eight patients sustained multiple injuries and secondary wound infections, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The infection can occur when dirt, vegetation or other material becomes lodged under the skin. The death toll from the May tornado stood at 151 on Friday. After Amber Alert, Kentucky teen charged in killings

EDMONTON, Ky. — Police who issued an Amber Alert for a 15-year-old, fearing he might be in danger after his guardians were found dead in their home, instead charged him Wednesday with murder in their killings. The alert was issued Tuesday after a relative found the bodies of 50-year-old Gary Holloway and 51-year-old Barbara Holloway at their home near Edmonton, a rural area dotted with dairy farms more than 100 miles south of Louisville. They also asked the public to be on the lookout for a 12-year-old girl who had been reported missing by her parents and was later found unharmed with the 15-year-old. She has not been charged.
