After Amber Alert, Kentucky teen charged in killings

EDMONTON, Ky. — Police who issued an Amber Alert for a 15-year-old, fearing he might be in danger after his guardians were found dead in their home, instead charged him Wednesday with murder in their killings.

The alert was issued Tuesday after a relative found the bodies of 50-year-old Gary Holloway and 51-year-old Barbara Holloway at their home near Edmonton, a rural area dotted with dairy farms more than 100 miles south of Louisville. They also asked the public to be on the lookout for a 12-year-old girl who had been reported missing by her parents and was later found unharmed with the 15-year-old. She has not been charged.

"At the onset of the investigation we had to consider every possible scenario, the possibility that they were perpetrators as well as victims," state police trooper Bill Gregory said.

Steve Massey, who identified himself as Gary Holloway's brother, said Wednesday he did not know of any problems the couple had with the teenager.

"That's out of my league," he said from the driveway of his brother's modest, vinyl-sided house. "I have no idea. You're asking the wrong person."

Massey described his brother as a former dairy farmer and said he was a "regular country boy" who liked to fish and hunt. He confirmed his brother was the teen's guardian but did not elaborate on the relationship and sped away in his car before reporters could ask additional questions.

State police say they found the teen driving his guardians' car in south-central Kentucky on Tuesday night.

The Amber Alert described the Holloways' car, and police say a firefighter alerted them after he saw it in Barren County. Gregory said the firefighter followed the car until state police cruisers caught up with it. There was a short chase when police tried to pull the car over about 15 miles from where the couple was found, and the 15-year-old drove off the road. Police say he and the 12-year-old ran away but were caught quickly.

Police interviewed the two and said Wednesday morning that the boy had been charged with murder, fleeing and evading, wanton endangerment, criminal mischief, reckless driving and driving without a license. They have not said whether he will be charged as an adult. The girl was released to her parent.

Police have not released a motive and said they do not know much about the Holloways' personal lives or how exactly they were related to the 15-year-old.

State police say more charges could be filed after a grand jury investigation.

Taliban claims responsibilty for attack on U.S. vehicles in Pakistan

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- The Taliban is claiming responsibility for an attack Friday on a convoy of U.S. Consulate vehicles in northwest Pakistan, saying it was in retaliation for the killing of Osama bin Laden. A car bomb targeted the vehicles in Peshawar, killing one person and wounding 11 others, police said. The bombing is the latest in a series of attacks in the nation following a raid this month by U.S. commandos that left the al Qaeda leader dead. IV Infections Examined After 9 Ala Hospital Deaths

Federal and state health officials were trying to figure out how intravenous feeding bags became contaminated with bacteria after nine critically ill patients died and 10 others were sickened at Alabama hospitals after being treated with the commonly used solutions. Health officials on Tuesday would not directly link the deaths to the outbreak of serratia marcescens bacteria at six hospitals, but the bags were pulled off the market.
